Who Is Ivan Scheier?
Ivan Scheier, PhD is known for his professional on-site consulting for volunteer programs and citizen participation efforts in the US and Canada since 1967. This includes involvement in over 100 publications including a dozen books on volunteering; serving on commissions for the White House Conference on Children and Youth, the National Advisory Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals and the National Forum on Volunteerism. This is only a small list of the many accomplishments and honors Ivan has received. He also served as the Director of Voluntas: The Center for Creative Community, headquartered in Madrid, New Mexico.
Ivan is known as the grandfather to organizations known as DOVIA's, "DOV's" " Associations," " Councils," or "Clusters." Nearly all exist to enhance the profession of volunteer management and to network with others. It was Ivan, who introduced us to the role of the "Dream Catcher."
Ivan Scheier and Marlene Wilson founded the Volunteer Program at Colorado University in Boulder in 1972. The program has trained several thousand volunteer directors throughout its' 25 years. Marlene served as the spark and faculty director with Ivan providing training through most of its remarkable existence. When discussions began about creating a volunteer management association in the Denver area, Marlene and Ivan provided their expertise in helping in the formation of the organization we now know as Denver DOVIA.
