DOVIA Day In L.A. – An Historic First

We began to build a bridge – between AVA, the only generic international professional association in our field, and 600-650 local/regional professional associations with nearly 50,000 members scattered across North America.

Over 100 people were there on DOVIA Day, October 5th, at the ICVA in Anaheim: the largest and more diverse assemblage of DOVIAs ever.

A top-level AVA delegation, led by President Jackie Norris and President-elect Mike Newman, listened with sensitivity and responded in the full spirit of cooperation. That spirit infused the day, preserved and strengthened by Jane Turner’s magnificent insights into process.

So we began to build, though under no illusions it will happen in a day. Indeed, a major milestone might well be a year hence at next year’s ICVA in Boston (October 255-28, 1995). There will almost certainly be a second annual DOVIA Day there, at which we will review plans for a partnership between AVA and local/regional professional associations, whatever their names – DOVIA, DOV, NCAVA, MCAVA, etc.

Please get connected to this history-making effort through the National DOVIA Network or an AVA-DOVIA Partnership Committee we’ll be working with closely. The Charge of that Committee – with a long record of contributions both in a local DOVIA and in AVA – is Jill Friedman Fixler, Volunteer and Student Placement Coordinator, Arapahoe House, Inc., 8801 Lipan, Thornton, CO 80221.

Some things your local association can do:

- Plan to have a representative at Boston DOVIA Day.

- Ditto, regional AVA-DOVIA meetings likely to be convened during the year (keep in touch with the National DOVIA Network or Jill, or AVA on that).

- Contribute as many accurate addresses as you can towards a major effort to develop a truly comprehensive directory of DOVIAs and other local professional associations throughout North America. We may also need some financial help here, especially if we try to provide a copy of the directory to every identified local association.

Contribute to the Partnership Committee your DOVIAs thoughts on key questions, such as:

- What can AVA do for local DOVIAs that they can’t do (or do as well) for themselves?

- What can local DOVIAs do for AVA that they cannot do (or do as well) for themselves?

- How is the evolving partnership to be financed?

- Whatever other questions you think should be added to the mix.

The Next Stage? Part-time Paid Or Stipended DOVIA Staff
The Michigan Association for Volunteer Administration (MAVA) has had such a person for years, but we began to wonder if it would stop there. Apparently not, for larger forward-looking DOVIAs such as DOVIA of King County (Seattle, WA). The following is reprinted from their November 1994 newsletter just to show how the hiring process might go. But please remember, this was not intended as a national hiring process, so far as we know, and in any case the hiring process is now completed:

DOVIA To Hire Staff Support Person
The DOVIA Board has voted to hire a DOVIA of King County. This staff person will be responsible to listen and respond to membership inquiries utilizing voice mail, send initial information and welcome letters and update the database and membership directory twice annually. All interested persons should send a letter of interest and a resume to DOVIA of King County at ***** by November 21. The position is 10 hours per month at $12.00 per hour to begin January 1, 1995. Qualifications include a valid driver’s license, and insurance as well as access to a computer and laser printer. The applicant must have or be willing to obtain a business license. Contact DOVIA of King County for more information."

Does anyone have any other examples of local or regional associations who have, or plan to have, part-time paid or stipended staff?
