In 1967 the Center for Continuing Education at Northeastern began publishing Volunteer Administration, a quarterly journal devoted to the promotion of research, theory, and creative programming of volunteer services.

Volunteer Administration was succeeded by The Journal of Volunteer Administration, published by the Association for Volunteer Administration (AVA) as the primary source of applied research relevant to volunteer management.

International Journal of Volunteer Administration, 2006-
In 2006, the Journal of Volunteer Administration transitioned to a new name, home base, and format. Now titled the International Journal of Volunteer Administration (The IJOVA), it is a professional peer reviewed publication of the Department of Agricultural and Human Sciences at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Published only in digital formats, IJOVA is offered in recognition of the critical role of professional managers of volunteers in mobilizing human resources to address serious human, community, and social needs through volunteerism.
Engage Journal, 2000-
In 2000, Susan J. Ellis and Steve McCurley launched the first electronic journal for the volunteerism field called e-Volunteerism. In 2020, the Susan J. Ellis Foundation took responsibility for publishing the journal and it is now called Engage. The journal is written for volunteer engagement leaders around the world who want to be informed and challenged about volunteering trends and issues.
Voluntary Action Leadership, 1975-early 1990's
Voluntary Action Leadership was originally published by the National Center for Voluntary Action in 1975, which later became VOLUNTEER: The National Center for Citizen Involvement. Intended for leaders in the field of volunteerism, this magazine provided a wide variety of timely content including many examples of volunteer activity, updates on legislation, current research, and very practical articles on volunteer management written by national trainers and thought-leaders.
